Certification Reimbursement Testing Program

TOP

Certification Reimbursement Testing Program
A one-test, one-time-only reimbursement testing program for exams offered by 39 nationally recognized certification associations.

Certification examinations document a person’s level of competency and achievement in a particular area. Members of the Utah Army National Guard are authorized after-the-fact reimbursement of the test fee for exams offered by 37 nationally recognized certification associations. It is a one (1) time, one (1) test only benefit. The only exception to this rule are Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exams which can be funded three times.

The examinations are administered by National Test Centers.

The soldier pays for the exam at the time of administration, takes the exam, then forwards the appropriate paperwork to the Education Services Office for reimbursement.  Costs of test range from $15.00 to $450.00. The test fee is reimbursed regardless of the score the soldier receives on the exam.

IMPORTANT: You can only be reimbursed for one (1) test, therefore you may choose to pay for a less expensive certification exam yourself and seek reimbursement for a higher cost exam in the future.

What nationally recognized certification associations are included in this program?
How do I obtain information concerning the types of tests offered, registration requirements, test fees, and test preparation?

Click here to visit the DANTES Examination Program Handbook Part III and find answers to all of these questions and more.

How do I schedule a test and apply for reimbursement?
To receive reimbursement for a DANTES-sponsored professional certification exam administered at a National Test Center, the Service member:

  1. Determines his or her area of interest and contacts the professional association for consultation, application, support materials and study guides.
  2. Reviews materials, determines eligibility to sit for the test, completes the application and submits it along with appropriate fees to the professional association. NOTE: Only actual exam costs are reimbursed. Registration fees, association fees, or preparation guide fees are NOT reimbursable fees.
  3. Upon notification from the professional association of eligibility to sit for the exam, the Service member prepares for the examination. Any study materials are purchased at the Service member's expense. Professional exams are difficult to pass and we highly recommend the candidate purchase any prep guides and study prior to sitting for the exam.
  4. Follow the information in the professional association packet and then work with the association in scheduling the test at a suggested National Test Center nearest to you.
  5. Upon receipt of the exam results, make a copy of the score report for your records, and send the original score report to:

    Utah Army National Guard
    ATTN: ESO
    12953 South Minuteman Drive
    Draper, Utah 84020

  6. Service members must also complete the DANTES Funded Certification Exam Form and submit it to the Education Office along with the original score report.
    • View and print a sample copy of DANTES Funded Certification Exam Form as a PDF document.
    • View and print a blank copy of DANTES Funded Certification Exam Form as a PDF document.
    • You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access these forms.
  7. The Education Office will forward the paperwork to DANTES which will in turn send a payment request to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). DFAS issues a reimbursement check directly to the Service member at the rate stated in the DANTES Examination Program Handbook Part III (see Web link shown above.) Service members can expect payment in 8 weeks.
