HMMWV Egress
Assistance Trainer (HEAT)
PURPOSE.
The purpose of the HEAT is to train Soldiers and all Department of
Defense (DoD) personnel on the effects of rollover and conduct drills
that will provide the skill and ability to react properly during a
rollover and/or emergency egress situation. Soldiers should receive
proper preparation and training to survive an inverted event. The HEAT,
linked with substantive training, may reduce/prevent rollover injuries
and fatalities. The device will reinforce the importance of seat
positioning, wearing seatbelts, demonstrating the feeling of being
disoriented, and the actual effort that is required to execute rollover
and emergency egress procedures. The trainer will allow individuals and
crews to rehearse and physically execute the necessary steps required to
survive a vehicle rollover. Conducting the training under controlled
conditions will allow vehicle occupants to gain experience in the proper
egress procedures. This training is necessary for Soldiers to achieve
self-control and overcome the natural fear and panic following the
catastrophic event which led to the vehicle rollover event.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION.
The HEAT is a training device designed to meet the Army specific
training needs of Soldiers, institutions and the operational
environment. It is required to support the commanders requirements for
initial, sustainment training, and leader development capabilities.
Hands-on training in a replicated tactical vehicle affords commanders
the capability to immerse Soldiers in a replicated operational
environment (without risking the safety of Soldiers, damaging expensive
equipment, or potentially polluting/destroying the environment). The
HEAT training device also allows Soldiers to perform crew drills in the
correct geo-spatial environment that are too dangerous for the live
environment.
TRAINING REQUIREMENT.
The Army continues to experience vehicle roll-over accidents.
Currently there is no approved training device that exposes a Soldier to
the actual effect of being inverted in a vehicle. There does not exist
in the Force Projection or Training Base a device/system to support this
critical training need. The HEAT will assist commanders in providing
that initial familiarization training IAW HMMWV rollover and emergency
egress procedures and as well as sustainment training. Each driver
compartment will replicate the interior configuration of the vehicle.
The device will permit students to become familiar with the arrangement
of the HMMWV internal environment and system controls should a rollover
occur. The device is designed to increase the situational awareness of
vehicle rollover by permitting the instructor to observe driver
performance and reactions to emergency conditions without requiring the
use of an actual vehicle for initial driving and sustainment training.
