The Utah National Guard's 23rd Army Band is always in need of qualified musicians, and has openings year-round for those interested.  Playing in the Band is a lot of fun and most members stay in well past their twenty-year mark.  Whether you are a high school band student, in college or out in the workforce, you are always welcome to come and sit in with us during a rehearsal.  So please come and check us out!  We look forward to your visit!

You can join if you are between the ages of 17 and 39 or have previously been enlisted in the Armed Forces.  Both new and prior service enlistments are accepted.  Accommodations can be made for those still in high school and for those who want to serve LDS missions.  Please contact the Band office or our recruiter for details.


Benefits include:
  • CASP (Civilian Acquired Skills Program) Enlistment - Enter as a Specialist (SPC / E-4) because you already possess the skill you will use in the military.
  • Drill and AT Pay for rehearsals and performances.
  • Your family can come to most events.
  • Montgomery GI Bill for College - $333 / month while you are a full-time college student. Part-time benefits are also available.
  • State tuition assistance in addition to the Montgomery GI Bill.
  • Full Commissary and PX/BX benefits.
  • Paid retirement after 20 years.
  • Perform Military and community service, and improve/maintain music skills with an internationally-recognized band, playing quality band literature.
  • Play a Professional-grade instrument.
  • Other military benefits such as group life insurance, medical and dental plans, eligibility for discounted home, property and automobile insurance through USAA and AFBA, etc.
Requirements:
  • Pass a Musical Audition - to include:
    • maj/min scales (need not be from memory)
    • sight reading
    • a prepared solo
  • Pass ASVAB and Army Physical Exam.
  • 6+2 Enlistment - Enlist for 6 years National Guard Duty and 2 years inactive reserve.
  • Complete Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for band.
  • New Physical Fitness standards (as of October 1, 2009) will vary by age, but if you can do 42 push-ups, 53 sit-ups (each in a two-minute timed test), and run 2 miles in 15:54 (males) or 19 push-ups, 53 sit-ups and run two miles in 18:54 (females), you will always be able to pass the test.
